Uncanny X-men #504

What I really want to say about this book is, FINALLY. Issue after issue, this title was loosing me. It became a chore to read. I can’t really figure out why. I mean, let’s face it, as an x-men fan I’ve been through worse. #500 wasn’t terrible but I just didn’t connect to it. Maybe it was the writing, maybe (okay most likely) it was the art that made the last few issues drag. This issue made me glad I kept reading.

I love Scott and Emma together and although Emma’s trek into people’s mind has become a staple plot device, I enjoyed this issue. Escher-like staircases of beautiful women fill Scott’s psyche as Emma wades through past incarnations of Rogue, Storm, Deathbird (yes Deathbird), Psylocke and many others, trying to find what Scott is hiding. With Jean’s help Scott has created a secret black box that Emma can’t crack. Proving once again Jean Grey will always be the thorn in Emma’s side.

Beast and Angel are in Buenos Aires trying to recruit Dr. Nemesis (whom I have never heard of) into helping them solve the “no-more-mutant” problem. Now I love Beast and I’m ecstatic that he has a story line again. I have to give Matt Fraction credit. When he joked about retarded Nazis during the X-men panel at Fanexpo this summer, I really didn’t think he was serious, but there they are.

Poor Colossus, he just can’t catch a break. He comes back from the dead just to have his girlfriend shot into space on a really big bullet. He can’t even ease his woes with a commemorative tattoo. He simply wants some soup and finds an evil tattooed guy from his past (again whom I have never heard of) beating on an old man.

So we’re not lacking plots—Colossus, Dr. Nemesis, Evil Women in the Mojoverse and the fear of mutants. The best thing about this issue is that Fraction doesn’t confuse them. The book is easy to follow and entertaining. Uncanny seems to be back on the right track. And really, what’s more fun that killing retarded Nazis? I can’t think of a thing...
